The griffin is a legendary creature with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. The griffin was perceived as a majestic creature and often the protector of righteousness.
Often seen in medieval heraldry, the origins of the mythical creature stretch further back in time to even beyond the Greeks. There is archeological evidence of griffin archetypes in both the Ancient Egyptian and Persian civilizations. The Lamassu is an Assyrian creature with a human head on top of the body of a lion and has the wings of an eagle. In Iranian mythology, the griffin is called Shirdal and has appeared on artifacts from as early as 3000 BC.
