“Con Brio” – Italian for “with vigour” – is one of the most recognisable Art Deco dance poses: a young dancer balancing on one leg, the other knee drawn high, her arms flung wide like wings and her head thrown back. She wears a short stylised costume, and the golden-brown bronze picks out the sharp lines of her limbs. Mounted on a round black base, the sculpture stands 38.2 cm tall and spans 26 cm across the outstretched arms.

The pose is widely associated with the German sculptor Ferdinand Preiss, whose figures of dancers and athletes in the 1920s and 1930s defined the elegance of Art Deco sculpture.
