Guan Yu (关羽) was a historical figure and a legendary hero from China's Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD). He was a military general and a sworn brother of Liu Bei and Zhang Fei. Guan Yu is known for his loyalty, righteousness, and bravery. He is often depicted in Chinese literature, history, and art as a symbol of martial valor and brotherhood.
Guan Yu is best known for his role in the Battle of Red Cliffs, where he led Liu Bei's forces against the warlord Cao Cao. After the battle, Guan Yu was appointed as the governor of Jing Province, where he served for several years. However, he was eventually betrayed by his subordinates and captured by the warlord Sun Quan, who had him executed. Despite his death, Guan Yu has been venerated as a god of loyalty and righteousness, and his cult remains popular in China and other parts of East Asia.
