Description
Description
Constantine XI Dragases Palaiologos was the last reigning Roman and Byzantine Emperor, his death came in the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Despite the city inherited many difficulties before his reign which culminated in the fall of Constantinople, contemporary sources generally speak respectfully of the Emperor Constantine. He managed to stockpile food for the upcoming siege and to repair the old Theodosian walls, but the poor Byzantine economy state did not allow him to raise the necessary army to defend the city against the massive Ottoman army. His enemy made an offer to Constantine XI in exchange for the surrender of Constantinople, Constantine replied:
“To surrender the city to you is beyond my authority or anyone else’s who lives in it, for all of us, after taking the mutual decision, shall die of our own free will without trying to save our lives.”
Following his death, he became a legendary figure in Greek folklore as the “Marble Emperor” who would awaken and recover the Empire and Constantinople from the Ottomans. His death mark the end of the Roman Empire.

Care
Care
Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, and prolonged exposure to moisture or direct sunlight. For bronze and metal pieces, an occasional light coat of wax or polish helps preserve the finish. Porcelain and glass items should be hand-cleaned gently to protect painted or gilded details.
