Description

This bronze bust portrays Napoleon Bonaparte in the way he is most often remembered: the bicorne hat worn sideways, a high-collared military coat and a stern, direct gaze. The patina shifts between dark brown and lighter highlights across the coat, while a small gold-toned cockade picks out the side of the hat. At 25 cm tall on a round pedestal, it is sized for a desk or bookshelf and makes an immediately recognisable portrait of one of Europe’s most debated historical figures.

Design & Artistic Details

The bust follows the classical format of a head and shoulders set on a turned socle, a convention that portrait sculptors used for statesmen and generals throughout the 19th century. Napoleon (1769–1821) rose from artillery officer to Emperor of the French and redrew the map of Europe before his final defeat at Waterloo in 1815. Here the sculptor emphasises authority rather than glamour: the collar frames the face, the arms are implied beneath the coat, and the hat’s broad silhouette gives the piece a strong outline from every angle.
