Anu (known as An in Sumerian) stands at the very pinnacle of the Mesopotamian pantheon — the supreme sky god, father of the gods, and ultimate authority over heaven and earth. As the lord of the heavens, Anu was believed to contain the entire universe within himself and govern the divine laws by which it operated. Every god who rose to power was said to receive the Anûtu — the sacred "An power" — as proof of his supreme and eternal status. His holy city was Uruk, one of the oldest and most magnificent cities of the ancient world.
