The Calvary Triptych, also known as the Isenheim Altarpiece, is a renowned masterpiece of religious art created by the German painter Matthias Grünewald. It was painted between 1512 and 1516 and is considered one of the most significant works of the Northern Renaissance.
The triptych was commissioned for the Hospital of St. Anthony in Isenheim, a monastery and medical facility that treated patients suffering from the devastating disease of ergotism, also known as St. Anthony's Fire. Ergotism caused severe symptoms, including gangrene, hallucinations, and convulsions. As a result, the altarpiece was specifically designed to provide spiritual solace and hope to the patients.
The Calvary Triptych consists of three panels, or sections, that can be closed like shutters or opened to reveal the central image. When closed, the triptych displays a somber image of the Crucifixion scene, with Christ on the cross and mourners surrounding him. The panels are painted in a muted, earthy color palette, reflecting the suffering and agony of the patients at the hospital.
When opened, the central panel reveals a vivid and powerful depiction of the Crucifixion. Christ's emaciated body is shown in a gruesome and highly realistic manner, emphasizing his suffering. Grünewald's attention to detail is remarkable, with meticulous anatomical accuracy and a focus on depicting the wounds and pain endured by Christ.
Flanking the central Crucifixion scene are two smaller panels. On the left panel, St. Sebastian, the patron saint against the plague, is depicted with arrows piercing his body. On the right panel, St. Anthony the Great, the patron saint of the Isenheim Hospital, is shown with the attributes of his disease, such as skin lesions. These saints were invoked to aid in the healing and alleviation of the patients' suffering.
The Calvary Triptych showcases Grünewald's exceptional skill as a painter and his ability to evoke powerful emotions through his art. The altarpiece's intense depiction of suffering and the profound spiritual message it conveys make it a remarkable and enduring masterpiece of religious art.
Today, the Calvary Triptych is housed in the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar, France, where it continues to captivate visitors with its striking imagery and emotional impact.
