Atlas is a figure from Greek mythology. He was a Titan, a race of powerful deities that preceded the Olympian gods. He is most famous for being punished by Zeus to hold up the celestial spheres on his shoulders, and thus preventing them from crushing the earth.
Atlas was the son of Iapetus and Clymene, and was the brother of Prometheus and Epimetheus. In the Titanomachy, the war between the Titans and the Olympians, he fought on the side of the Titans and was defeated by Zeus. As a punishment, Zeus condemned him to hold up the celestial spheres on his shoulders for all eternity.
Atlas is often depicted as a powerful and muscular man, holding the celestial spheres on his shoulders. He is also associated with astronomy and navigation, as he was said to have knowledge of the stars and the movements of the heavens.
In some versions of the myth, Atlas was also associated with the Hesperides, who guarded a golden apple tree and had to keep watch over the apples.
Atlas has become a symbol of strength, endurance and stoicism, as he was condemned to hold up the celestial spheres for eternity, he represents the idea of a never-ending burden.
His name is also used in the term "Atlas of maps" which refers to a collection of maps that are bound together in a book or collection.
