Description
Orpheus, a legendary musician, fell deeply in love with Eurydice. However, their happiness was short-lived when Eurydice was bitten by a venomous snake and died. Devastated, Orpheus descended into the Underworld to plead with Hades and Persephone to bring her back.
With the power of his enchanting music, Orpheus moved the rulers of the dead, who agreed to let Eurydice return to the world of the living—on one condition: he must not look back at her until they were both fully out of the Underworld.
As shown in the sculpture, the couple is seen escaping, but Orpheus, overcome by doubt and love, turns back too soon. The moment he does, Eurydice is tragically pulled back into the Underworld forever, lost to him once again.
This piece beautifully illustrates the tension of this final moment—Orpheus leading Eurydice, her body still caught between worlds, and a ferocious Underworld beast ready to drag her back.
